Pregnant Dog Care

Congratulations, your dog is expecting! There are a couple of things that you can do to keep your dog healthy during pregnancy.

Nutrition: the basic adult formula food will not provide the extra nutrients your dog needs during pregnancy. It is a good idea to slowly switch your dog to a high quality puppy dog food just before mating and she should stay on that until after she has weaned her puppies. This will help her and her puppies get the best from her pregnancy.

Vaccinations: Keep your dog up to date so that she passes on a strong immunity to her pups. If you are overdue the vaccinations during the pregnancy, just talk to us and we can recommend what she can take while pregnant.

Protection: Keep giving your flea and worming treatments to your dog. Pregnant dogs can pass on roundworms to unborn pups so continue to treat as normal for both mum and pup

Exercise: regular walks will help keep your pregnant dog strong and ready for her new arrivals. Walking is a great way to keep her fit and read for labour. Keep the walks shorter and more regular during pregnancy.

Comfort: create a nice place for your dog to rest and give birth in. You want them to feel relaxed, comfortable and confident. Keep nice warm blankets and a private space so she can have a nice place for the final days of pregnancy and as she gives birth to her pups

Then all you have left to do is think of the names for all these new puppies that are going to arrive!
